Headington Villa

The owners wanted to rejuvenate the garden surrounding their Italian-style villa, creating a richer and more distinctive setting for the house.

The design needed to respect the garden’s established character while introducing a more contemporary planting style. Existing mature trees and shrubs were to be retained wherever possible, with new planting bringing greater texture, movement and seasonal interest.

The mature garden already contained a strong framework of established trees and shrubs.

These gave the space scale, privacy and atmosphere, but also created areas of shade and competition that needed to be carefully considered. The villa provided an elegant architectural backdrop, offering an opportunity to create a garden that balanced formality and structure with softer, more expressive planting.

Rather than clearing the site and beginning again, the design developed around what was already thriving.

The garden was reshaped through planting, using carefully composed combinations to connect the existing mature structure with the architecture of the villa.

Repeated forms, colours and textures create rhythm throughout the space, while changes in height and density produce moments of enclosure, openness and intrigue.

The planting moves around existing trees and shrubs, allowing established specimens to remain an integral part of the design rather than feeling separate from it.

The material palette was kept restrained so that the villa and planting remained the main focus.

The new planting combines strong architectural forms with softer perennials and grasses. Bold foliage provides structure and contrast, while looser flowering plants create movement and seasonal change.

Species were selected to respond to the garden’s varied conditions, particularly the areas influenced by mature tree cover. The result is a layered planting scheme that feels contemporary without appearing imposed, bringing drama, texture and cohesion to the established garden.
